Sunken John was formed in Panama City, Florida during the summer of 1995 by three kids that just wanted to thrash up the instruments they had purchased for the sole purpose of playing with some good friends. None of the guys in the band had ever played their instruments before and surely had never even made an attempt to use a singing voice toward anything constructive (except for Matt, I think he was in the choir in like the 5th grade). The band was just sort of a joke at first, as you can tell by the name they still use, and the first three or four shows (between January and June of '96) were nothing short of complete disasters. But the guys were having fun with it and had actually made some money so they continued writing songs and playing shows whenever and wherever they could - places like vacant bingo palaces, public parks, the Sheikh beach house, youth rec centers, and a handfull of bootie-shakin' clubs on Panama City Beach. Gradually these three young punks began to adopt traditional punk rock values and develop a pro-unity, anti-fascist ideology and were becoming accepted with the local community before and during 1997, where they continued to perform local shows with their friends' bands on into 1998 (everyday, circle, birth, ten sleep creek, the sionite jelps, 99 paradigms, cede, citizen apathy, could be worse, the gory flamers, kill whitey, useless, the lunge puppets) and even such respected punk and ska bands as f.y.p., squirtgun, mad caddies, less than jake, teen idols, mustard plug, furious george, and the b-movie rats, who somehow ended up touring through Panama City. Sunken John remained in Panama City until August of 1998, when they picked up and moved to Gainesville, Florida (all at age 18) where they still live today and hope to completely destroy the town.
